DENNIS Cometti and Eddie McGuire are on 3AW's short list of possible commentators to call football next season with Rex Hunt. The station has started the painful search for a new caller to replace Clinton Grybas, who tragically died last month.

Cometti, recognised as football's top caller, would still call Friday night games for Channel 7 but would join Hunt on 3AW only for Saturday games.

Ironically, Grybas was considered by many as the next Cometti.

3AW admits that ideally it wants a person who would be able to call the Friday night game as well as the following day's clash.

Radio station SEN is also interested in gaining McGuire's services after he called a couple of games for the network last season.

While McGuire is interested in returning to a more significant role on radio, his other position as Collingwood president would place restrictions on his availability to call football.

He would still be expected to host Collingwood pre-match lunches.

McGuire had played a major role in Triple M's football coverage before concentrating on his television career with Channel Nine.

Cometti and McGuire are among a big group of callers who are expected to be sounded out for the prime Saturday calling role, while including 3AW's Dwayne Russell.

3AW, which is keen to find out about Cometti's availability, is also expected to trial a new caller during the NAB Cup pre-season games.

Shane McInnes, a caller with National Indigenous Radio Service (NIRS), started work with 3AW during the Australian Open tennis.

He could get to call a NAB Cup game in the first week of the series when Hunt is in China.
