Brisbane radio station 882 4BH throws the topic open every year, with the top 1000 most popular songs - as voted by listeners - played over a two-week period to a final, nail-biting finale which usually sees the Beatles battling with ABBA or the Righteous Brothers.

Program manager Geoff Harrison said the radio stations takes "thousands" of votes from listeners over a three-week period.

"It takes about two weeks - or 10 days - to play the top 1000 songs," he said.

"The top 200 to 300 are similar every year, and I could pretty much pick what the top 50 are going to be."

Perennial favourites include Pretty Woman (Roy Orbison), Dancing Queen (ABBA), Imagine (John Lennon) and Unchained Melody (The Righteous Brothers), Mr Harrison said.

"One surprise this year was Shaddap You Face by Joe Dolce.

"A new entry onto the list this year was True Blue by John Williamson.

"I think that's got something to do with the death of Steve Irwin, because he's very much associated with that song."
