The former foreign affairs minister Alexander Downer has been questioned about his political future during his first shift as a radio talkback host.

The Liberal backbencher and his wife Nicky are co-hosting a program called 'The Long Lunch' on Adelaide radio station Fiveaa.

Mr Downer is not being paid by the station for his two-week stint.

One caller asked Mr Downer whether he plans to serve out a full term.

Mr Downer says he would like to remain as the member for Mayo.

"Well, sounds as though you're interviewing me rather than me interviewing you, but anyway Michael, yes, look I just love being the member for Mayo," he said.

"You know if it's possible I'd like to continue as the member there."
