The board of Wollongong community radio station VOX FM says it still supports the program Struggle Street, despite taking its presenter Paul Matters off the air.

Mr Matters is one of up to four presenters at the New South Wales south coast station, who have been told not to return, but their ban is subject to an appeal.

He says he is considering charging police for illegal detention, pending a review of footage taken of his arrest.

Mr Matters says the cameraman, a local community activist, was told by police to turn his camera off.

"I'm checking the law on that, that is another serious attack on free speech and it seems to me that some senior police in Wollongong are very politically partisan," he said.

"Basically they have four police cars there with a police inspector, a sergeant and a number of other police which just indicates how political the whole thing now is."
