Macquarie capital grab

Just imagine for a minute if there was an announcement in the next 24 to 96 hours that Macquarie Group were keen to off load some of their diverse group of investments and amongst them was Macquarie Regional Radio Group? The company put an announcement to the stock exchange after the close of the market today.

It said Macquarie Group is contemplating a capital raising and seeking a trading halt until such time as it is in a position to make a further announcement in relation to the capital raising. ABC article

Jamie, Dunn and dusted?

When Jamie Dunn signed on to present breakfast at 4BC breakfast this year there was no doubt it was going to be a hard slog for the FM veteran to adapt to the AM talk format. Jamie joined 4BC on a performance based contract so it will come as no shock if he was to be  removed from his current role when survey 3 of the Nielsen ratings are released on May 12.
With the rumours that have been doing the rounds lately it looks like he may only have a couple of weeks left on breakfast however could Jamie move to another slot at the station? Related article CourierMail

Survey 1 2009 Gold Coast

The first radio ratings survey for the Gold Coast/ Tweed Heads region was released today. Sister stations Gold and Sea FM both came in equal first although both lost big chunks of market share as is shown below. Hot Tomato has staked their claim of being the only Gold Coast station to show any growth and no doubt are already looking forward to see what the next survey brings.

Austereo tickled pink!

Austereo has announced Pink Radio, an all-new digital station dedicated to playing Pink songs and all her favourite artists 24 hours a day.

The station has been launched to celebrate Pink’s Funhouse Tour – the largest music tour ever in Australia. The station will play Pink songs, supported by interviews with Pink by the Today Network’s Kyle and Jackie O and Hamish and Andy and songs from her favourite acts.

Longtime 2CC breakfast presenter Mike Jefferys has departed the station and it is believed former  Mix 106.3 presenter Mark Parton will be his replacement. With it being a public holiday in Canberra breakfast will be presented by Anthony Kierce on Monday and it likely Mark Parton will be on air in the slot from Tuesday.

Is Jones set to return?

Talk of  'The Silver Hiace' circling the block for a pick up has been dismissed by 2GB's breakfast supremo Alan Jones.  He told a Sydney newspaper 'he doesn't have cancer anymore, and is not dying.' Subject to a final check up this week it is believed Jones will return to air on Monday the 4th of May after an extended break to recover from a virus which was dragging down his health.

Support for ABC Kids TV, with Reservation

“Friends of the ABC welcomes the Government’s announcement. But I would feel more comfortable if we knew how much funding the ABC will get for its entire operation, something we won't know until the May Federal Budget," said Glenys Stradijot, a spokesperson for Friends of the ABC (Vic).

Heat on mayor's radio spot

CAIRNS Mayor Val Schier has been accused of buying her way back on to local radio - and the council is picking up the tab. Yesterday, Cairns Regional Council chief executive officer Noel Briggs said he would launch an investigation into the agreement, believed to be worth up to $26,000, which bought the mayor an hour of air time each Friday morning. The best radio ad of 2009 will be battled out between 26 ad agencies, radio stations and production studios as part of the national Siren Awards, which will be announced in Sydney next month.

DMG Radio Australia hopes to woo listeners to digital with the launch of two new stations ahead of the May 1 switch-on. The network finally revealed its plans for two 24-hour digital stations on Wednesday night - a dance station Novanation and a chill-out one called Koffee.
Novanation is aimed at 18- to 34-year-olds, featuring artists like Presets, Marco V and Pnau while Koffee is directed at an older audience, playing the likes of Dido, Enya, Josh Pyke and Moby. Full story

Spoonman fans full of hope

There are murmurs from certain Spoonman fan sites, that there is a possibility of the ATFS- podcast/internet show making a return. With all three: Spoonman, Garfield and Odie working at Triple M the fans believe there is every possibility of getting the show back up if there is enough support. There is a poll currently being held at the Spoonman fan site and a discussion forum on the same site. Radio News has previously made enquiries to Austereo about Spoonman and as far as we know there are no plans at this stage of a return to Triple M so could this be the alternative the fans having been waiting for.

The Australian radio industry today announced that the first advertisements in the digital radio multi-million dollar awareness campaign will go to air on the 13 April 2009 across all commercial radio stations and in 65 languages on SBS radio in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

ABC sweeps radio gongs at SA media awards

ABC broadcasters have won every radio award presented at the annual South Australian media awards last night.

Alex Parry won the award for best news and current affairs reporting and Nance Haxton took out the award for best radio feature.

Peter Goers from the 891 Evening Show was named the state's best radio broadcaster.

Radio resilient performance – CEASA figures

CRA RELEASE: Commercial Economic Advisory Service of Australia (CEASA) figures released yesterday for the 2008 calendar year show radio continues to be a resilient media in tough times attracting advertising revenue of $991.7 million in 2008 – a slight increase of around 0.7% from $984.4 million in 2007.

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Joan Warner, said CEASA’s Advertising Expenditure in Main Media report for the year ended December 31, 2008 shows radio advertising again proved to be resilient in tough economic times.

“The CEASA figures show that metropolitan advertising revenue fell slightly (0.1%) and regional ad revenue grew by around two per cent last year – and overall radio delivered a slight increase in revenue for the year,” Ms Warner said.

“The largest metropolitan revenue market of Sydney was particularly challenging last year for the radio industry and along with the global economic crisis, impacted strongly on the overall figures.”

Ms Warner said the radio industry had enjoyed several years of strong growth over the past few years and that the introduction of digital radio next month would bring added interest and opportunities for the industry.

“The industry is excited about the opportunities digital radio offers and is gearing up for an unprecedented marketing and promotional campaign, beginning Easter Monday, highlighting the benefits of digital radio for listeners,” Ms Warner said.

500 farewell radio legend John Vincent

John "Vinnie" Vincent's magnificent, mellifluous voice boomed out one last time to 500 mourners at his funeral service today. "Take care and I love you lots", he beseeched. His final recording made for the Debonair's club, which raises funds for hard-up entertainers, was played for the first time in public to celebrate the life of one of Adelaide's most colourful, funniest and loved radio personalities. McEncroe initially thought it was an April Fools day gag when she was told Mix had that option in her contract and they were going to exercise it. She finished yesterday and the program will now be known as Mix Mornings with Brig and Tom.
Brigitte Duclos and Tom Gleeson will now be joined by anchor Simon Diaz who will have a more active role in the program.
