At 17 Papps joined the ABC Hobart becoming the youngest race caller in Australia. Despite spending 5 years at Melbourne's 3UZ it was in Adelaide that he became a household name calling all 3 racing codes for radio stations 5DN and Fiveaa. It was at Fiveaa where it ended very badly for Ron in the late 1990's when he lodged an unfair dismissal claim against the station's owners Festival City Broadcasters.
